Only Oblivion to Look Forward To Finishing David Foster Wallace
Only Oblivion to Look Forward To Finishing David Foster Wallace My fingers tap the spines of my books, working from the top left corner of my TBR shelf to the bottom right, pausing occasionally to slide a book from its spot before returning it a few seconds later. They always stop at David Foster Wallaces Oblivion, the last story collection he published. Its been there for more than a year now, passed over time and again. Im sure I heard the news of Wallaces death on or shortly after September 12, 2008. While I had read only one of his short stories, it was obvious that a big part of the reading public had been devouring every word this man had to offer. I clicked some links and found a few of his essays and some nonfiction and began to feel like someone hearing Nevermind for the first time in May of 1994. Where had this been? How had I missed it? And so I set about un-missing everything I could find with his name on it. Yes, the commencement address, of course. An essay collection. The doorstop, with an insufficient dictionary beside me. A book of short fiction (and its film adaptation, just to see how they thought theyd pull something like that off). And so on. I would finish a book and then scour the internet for DFW-related flotsam and jetsam, watching bits of interviews on Youtube, reading profiles and old reviews anywhere I could find them. Id found a voice that challenged, enthralled, and changed me, that alternately put things exactly as I imagined I would if I had the linguistic capacity and as I would never think to put them at all, and I wanted more. But all the while, that finite point on the horizon that had been invisible when I started loomed larger and larger. I began to take longer breaks between Wallaces books and slowed way down when I actually read one, savoring every page-long sentence and footnote along the way. I was able to stretch his work out over five years, but Oblivion is finally coming off the shelf. In a weird way, this feels more like his true death to me than his suicide ever could have, because Wallaces work has given me the illusory impression that I know him. For five years, hes been with me. Ive taught his work to my students and pushed his books on friends. I even wear one of those little rubber bracelets, given to me by a teacher from South Carolina, that reads, THIS IS WATER DFW. Ive read the mans syllabi a half-dozen times, you guys. The phrase, I believe, is bought in. Hook, line, sinker. And now Ive come to the end. Maybe it all sounds a little melodramatic, the language of obsession and talk of true deaths, but the ones who burn out, who dont get their chance to fade away, have that effect on us, dont they? Yes, I can (and will) re-read Wallaces work. Maybe all of it, at some point. But if youve ever felt jealous of someone who is reading a book you love for the first time, then youll understand me when I say it just isnt the same. Because whats weird is that we book nerds say we want to be well-read, and we do, but like children desperate for Christmas mornings arrival, we forget how empty December 26th can feel. There is a magic in the anticipation of a favorite authors next work. In fact, I would argue that one of the great privileges of being a reader is getting to experience that exact feeling. So yes, finishing David Foster Wallace is both bitter and sweet, but I cant pretend that reading my way to this point was anything other than the latter. Thanks, Dave. For five of the best reading years I could imagine. For confronting me. For making me think. For sending me to the dictionary. For lobsters and cruise lines and tennis academies and rehab facilities and diving boards and hideous men and John McCain and Jeopardy! and water. Thanks. ____________________________ Sign up for our newsletter to have the best of Book Riot delivered straight to your inbox every week. No spam. We promise. Globalization Strategy Of The Korean Pop Music - 9775 Words
Executive Summary Today hybridisation has become a globalisation strategy especially for cultural products. It is defined as a re-organisation of different cultural elements and creates new culture forms or produces hybrid cultural products which could reach a wider range of global audiences. Culture Technology (CT), a concept similar to hybridisation has been applied by Korean music labels in marketing their music products overseas. This has been viewed by many marketers and scholars as one of the key reasons that promotes overseas popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop). Inspired by the hybridisation strategy of cultural products and successful applications of CT in K-pop, this paper looks into hybridisation in music products in a value chain approach. This would be the first attempt to discuss hybridisation in music products along value chain. Precisely, in this paper, based on the music products value chain models built by different scholars, a new value chain model will be built. The new model wil l be mainly divided into three parts ââ¬â inputs, labels and distributions. Then, how hybridisation functions in this model and why it could help enhancing music productsââ¬â¢ foreign marketability are to be discussed according to the three parts. Examples of applications will also be given to prove the validity and applicability of this model. S.M. He laughed. ââ¬Å"I just want to enthrall you sexually while I have the chance.â⬠ââ¬Å"I think you have.â⬠He carried me as if I weighed no more than a child, and I knew that wasnââ¬â¢t true. I was not now nor have I ever been a small girl. I probably weighed as much as he did, or near enough. That he could sling me around like a sack of potatoes should have annoyed me. Instead, I found myself enchanted by his great big muscles and aroused by his Neanderthal tactics. Yep, I definitely had it bad. For a man who could be a werewolf. I figured the sex would be better in the bed, but it wasnââ¬â¢t. The sex was spectacular wherever we had it ââ¬â in a bed, at the pond, on the floor. His fingers lazily played with my hair, then drifted across my spine. I lay facedown, arm hanging limply off the bed, legs all tangled with his. When I turned my head, he was so close his nose brushed mine. ââ¬Å"Jessie?â⬠We were still nose to nose, breath mingling, hips touching. ââ¬Å"Will?â⬠He smiled. ââ¬Å"You hardly ever call me that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠ââ¬Å"I think you called me Cadotte until about an hour ago.â⬠ââ¬Å"It seems bad form to call a guy whoââ¬â¢s making you scream by his last name.â⬠His smile faded; uncertainty flickered in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Hey, whatââ¬â¢s the matter?â⬠I reached for him, but he was already moving away. ââ¬Å"You arenââ¬â¢t with me for the sex, are you?â⬠I sat up. ââ¬Å"Are you that insecure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠My eyebrows shot up. Heââ¬â¢d never seemed insecure to me. He was beautiful, built, brilliant. What did he have to be insecure about? I asked him. ââ¬Å"Do you know how many women have slept with me because of my face? Because Iââ¬â¢m good in bed?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do I want to know?â⬠His lips twitched, relieving some of the tension. ââ¬Å"Probably not.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then letââ¬â¢s leave them in the past where they belong. Donââ¬â¢t we have enough to worry about right now?â⬠His gaze met mine. The uncertainty was gone, replaced by a wariness that made the hair on my forearms prickle. We had a helluva lot more to worry about tonight than old lovers. He nodded and opened his arms. ââ¬Å"Come here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Again?â⬠ââ¬Å"Got a problem with that?â⬠I pretended to think. ââ¬Å"Not really.â⬠I slid across the bed and kissed him. I didnââ¬â¢t want to stop; I didnââ¬â¢t want to think. Thereââ¬â¢d be time enough for that later. Maybe. Right now I only wanted to be with him, to feel the things only Will could make me feel. But as he moved inside of me, my treacherous mind went clickety-clack. The blue moon threatened. Tonight was the night when everything changed ââ¬â or maybe everyone. What if Will was not only the love of my life but the monster Iââ¬â¢d been searching for? What if heââ¬â¢d killed people? What if heââ¬â¢d eaten them? What if he was a power-hungry nutcase bent on ruling the world? What ifâ⬠¦ ? My body betrayed me, shutting down my mind, making me come apart in his arms. Love was wearing me out ââ¬â and the sex wasnââ¬â¢t bad, either. I could no longer keep my eyes open. As I fell asleep with his cheek nuzzling my hair, the answer to my questions came to me with brilliant clarity. Whatever he was, I loved him. If he was cursed, Iââ¬â¢d try to cure him. There must be a way. I only had to find it. I awoke to the twilight and an empty bed. I wasnââ¬â¢t worried; not at first. I actually believed he loved me. But as I wandered through my empty apartment and realized Will was gone and the moon was rising, uncertainty set in. I reached for the totem Iââ¬â¢d been wearing around my neck for weeks, but it wasnââ¬â¢t there. My heart gave one painful, panicked thud before I remembered Iââ¬â¢d taken it off as I always did when I went to bed. If Iââ¬â¢d actually been wearing the thing, it would have strangled me during our energetic bedroom activities. Not to mention Iââ¬â¢d have had to explain to Will that Iââ¬â¢d had the thing all along. I went back into my room, crossed to the dresser, reached for the totem. My fingers came up empty. I dropped to my knees, crawled around the floor patting the carpet. Tore the room apart in a frenzy. But nothing changed what I knew in my gut. Will was gone, and so was the stone.
